God's Promises for You

I want to share just a couple of  favorite stories that I love to tell.

  •     There was a time when I had serious back problems. After fighting it for months, I had been ordered by the doctor to stay flat on my back all weekend and if I wasn't better by Monday, he was putting me in traction then we were going to consider surgery. I'm glad I was too stubborn to follow the doctor's orders, for that weekend I went to a prayer meeting in a home and I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. With it, I got complete and permanent healing for my back. With my faith at a high point, God was able to work.
  •     My sister always said she wanted me to take her to town because I never had any trouble finding parking places. One day I finally admitted, "I pray for them! Not always, but if I'm in a hurry, or have heavy stuff to unload, or have someone along who has trouble walking and I really need a spot close to the store. I just believe that God cares about little things like that and will help me." I remembered one time I had to make a stop at Wal-Mart and was in a real rush. The parking lot was packed and there wasn't a spot anywhere. I stopped right in the middle of the lane and prayed and when I looked up, three cars were backing out!
  •     I had plumbing problems one time. Everything in the house was clogged. I'd worked and worked at trying to get a snake through the lines or open it by pouring boiling water through. Nothing loosened it. At last, I remembered there was a plug in the pipe in the basement my brother-in-law had put in once before when he unclogged it and I dragged the snake and the step stool down there. I had enough sense to know there'd be some dirty water when I pulled out the plug, and I got out of the way and set a bucket under it. Then I climbed on the stool and tried the snake. I still wasn't making any progress and I was getting tired, cross and discouraged. Finally, I just stood there in the middle of the floor, looking at it and yelled out my prayer, "God, You have just GOT to help me!" I should have remembered to move. When the drains suddenly opened up and all that nasty water came pouring out that plug hole, I was still standing right under it! I laughed and rejoiced anyway.

Every day, I run into people who become a burden on my heart. Facing serious illness, death of a loved one, financial crises, problems within the family, and all the many troubles we all get a share of as we go through life, they sure don't have that "joy unspeakable" that we're told should be part of being a Christian. I've been there, too, so I'm going to give myself a pep talk and let you share it if you wish.

"And whatever we ask we receive of Him because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight." 1 John 3:22

There are things that you can have, because God said it and He doesn't lie. He tells us to come boldly and ask for mercy and grace, for help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16). He tells us that ALL things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) He tells us He loves us and it pleases Him to give us good things. (Luke 12:32).

Yet, none of this is available to a bratty, demanding child. It is offered freely to the loving child who is seeking to serve and praise God and follow the way God wants him to live. That child has only to ask for whatever he needs (John 14:13-14). One of my mother's favorite, and often-quoted verses was "They that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31) Pastor Stan reminded us once that "waiting on the Lord" doesn't mean sitting on your fanny and waiting for the Lord to do something for you. (I don't think he used those exact words). Instead, it means to be a waiter at the table of the Lord - a servant.

Being able to receive God's promises is dependent upon keeping His commandments and doing the things that are pleasing in His sight. It is not a trade-off, nor a game we can make work for us, but a service done out of love that is appreciated and rewarded. When we do this, we can expect to be blessed. We can expect our prayers to be heard and answered, often in amazing ways. We are to come to Him and pray in faith, believing that we will receive, without wavering, and we shall have an answer. (Mark 11:24, James 1:6-8).

Have problems gotten you down? Have worry or sickness taken control of your heart and mind? Are you depressed or weary? Are you struggling financially? Turn to God's word. There is so much comfort there for every situation - and the promises of God are sure. (Numbers 23:19)

Search the scriptures for yourself and find the words God has put there for you and your situation. They are there! I cannot begin to list all the words of comfort, encouragement, and promise, but start with some of these:

I have no reason to be afraid, for God is with me. Psalms 23.4 No weapon formed against me shall prosper. Isaiah 54:14 No evil can come to me, because He has given His angels charge over me. Psalms 91:10-11, Proverbs 12:28 The devil flees from me because I resist him in the name of Jesus. James 4:7 Christ has redeemed me from poverty, sickness, and spiritual death. Galations 3:13, Deuteronomy 28, 2 Corinthians 8:9, John 10:10, John 5:24 I give cheerfully and God makes sure I have enough. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 The Lord has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant. Psalms 35:27, Galations 3:14 God supplies my needs according to His riches. Phillipians 4:19 I have the spirit of wisdom; my mind is renewed. Ephesians 1:17-18, Romans 12:2 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phillipians 4:13 The peace of God keeps my heart and mind. Phillipians 4:7-8 God is on my side. Who can be against me? Who can separate me from Him? 2 Corinthians 6:16, John 10:10, 2 Peter 1:3-4, Romans 8:31. By His stripes, I am healed. Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24 Jesus is able to heal all kinds of sickness. Matthew 4:23 If I lack wisdom, I only have to ask for it. James 1:5 Whatever I bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever I loose on earth, will be loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:19, 18:18 My fervent prayers can make great things happen. James 5:16
